At Kreate Dance Centre we follow the ISTD syllabus in Imperial Ballet, Modern and Tap dance.
The ISTD syllabus is designed for children who dance for fun and for those wishing to progress professionally, either as a performer or dance teacher.
The exercises throughout the grades develop to progress children’s technical abilities, giving them the skills, grace and poise found in dance
Examinations have been devised by the ISTD. The examinations are accredited and approved by the QCA which means they are now included on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) at levels 1, 2 and 3 - Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced. They are recognised by Schools, Colleges and Universities and can eventually lead to a professional teaching qualification.
This framework includes qualifications in all fields of study. It places dance examinations within the context of other qualifications and recognises equivalence in levels of knowledge, skills and understanding required for their attainment. This therefore means dance exams have a parity with education qualifications such as GCSE's and A-levels.
Grade Six - equivalent to AS/A Level
Grades 4 and 5 - equivalent to GCSE Grades A* to C
Grades 1, 2 and 3 - equivalent to GCSE Grades D - G
All ISTD examination results are monitored by the ISTD/QCA and all teachers must maintain the recognised pass rate to remain eligible to enter candidates in the future. Teachers regularly attend training courses to update on new syllabi and exam requirements.

During the year we hold exams where students can perform in front of an ISTD examiner who comes to the dance centre. The children go into the studio in groups and demonstrate all of the exercises they have been practicing in class. They also perform amalgamations and a variation/solo dance on their own. The teacher does not go into the exam with the exception of the Primary Class examination where the exam is run just like a class with the regular teacher running the examination.
Every student at the Kreate Dance Centre will be given the opportunity to take examinations once the required standard is achieved and it is the teacher who decides when each student is ready.
A student is usually in a grade for 4-5 terms before they are ready to take the examination, it is very important that attendance is consistent when preparing for an exam. It is usual practice to offer extra classes in the weeks leading up to exams to help each student achieve their full potential.
The exam fee is separate from class fees and written consent and payment is necessary before students can be entered.
We are aware that for various reasons some children are unable to take examinations and these children are moved up to the next grade when appropriate.
Exams are not compulsory but can be useful as a measure of progress and also as a celebration of months of hard work.
Please remember, primarily, DANCING IS FUN and should be enjoyed.
